Acoustics

Acoustics is a branch of physics which involves the study of sound (or acoustic energy) and devices based on the principle.

Doctor Sevrin was considered to be "a brilliant research engineer in the fields of acoustics, communications and electronics on Tiburon." (TOS: "The Way to Eden")

Leah Brahms, one of the designers of the Galaxy-class starship, noted to Geordi La Forge that she didn't think that the acoustic signature of the USS Enterprise-D's power-transfer conduits sounded right because of La Forge's modification which included the addition of a mid-range phase adjuster. La Forge, who was also aware of the change in the acoustic signature, told Brahms that she was "the only other person in the galaxy who could pick that up." (TNG: "Galaxy's Child")

According to Data, the acoustics in Ten Forward aboard the Enterprise-D were "most favorable" for playing his violin in. (TNG: "Inheritance") Jean-Luc Picard, however, found that the fourth intersect in Jefferies tube 25 was the most acoustically perfect spot aboard the Enterprise for playing his Ressikan flute. He explained to Nella Daren that the location was perfect because the intersection acted as a resonance chamber. (TNG: "Lessons")

Deanna Troi once asked Data to sculpt music out of clay. Data, not understanding the request, replied stating that "music is a collection of acoustic vibrations. How can I reproduce a sound with clay?" Troi told Data to "think of the effects that sounds have on people, the images that music brings to your mind, and then give it a form." (TNG: "Masks")

In the opinion of Harry Kim, the cargo bay aboard the USS Voyager had bad acoustics for playing his clarinet. (VOY: "The Thaw")

When it was suggested that the Doctor sing in one of the lecture halls at a Qomarian university, he was unsure that a lecture hall "would meet the acoustic requirements" of his voice. Nevertheless, the hall was used following a number of modifications. (VOY: "Virtuoso")

While stranded for several days aboard the escape pod from the IKS Koraga, Lieutenant Commander Worf found the acoustics aboard the pod to be favorable allowing him to sing such Klingon opera as Gav'ot toh'va. (DS9: "Penumbra")
