American Sign Language was a type of sign language used in the United States, Canada, and various non-English-speaking countries on Earth.

The educational background of Kathryn Janeway included study in American Sign Language, chromolinguistics, and the gestural idioms of the Leyron. Despite this experience, she could not get the hang of the Tak Tak's form of communication in 2373. (VOY: "Macrocosm")
