For the TNG episode with a similar title, please see "Angel One".

Angel I was the first planet of the Angel system, and was located near the Romulan Neutral Zone. This M-class planet supported carbon-based flora and fauna and was sparsely populated with intelligent life. Angel I has no platinum deposits. By 2302, the native civilization had reached the technological equivalent of Earth's mid-20th century.

Historical

In 2302, a Federation vessel visited Angel I, marking the last official contact between the Federation and the planet before the USS Enterprise-D arrived in the system in 2364 on an investigation into the fate of the Federation freighter Odin, which collided with an asteroid near Angel I in 2357.

The survivors of the Odin had landed on the planet, resulting in a minor shift in opinion and attitude towards the treatment of male members of society. It is believed that this shift may grow over time, and men may gain equal rights.

Political

Angel I had evolved into a constitutional oligarchy that was governed by the Parliament, an elected matriarchy consisting of six Mistresses and an overall leader, the Elected One. Its society is established around the idea that males are considered second-class citizens. The women are the hunters and the soldiers. In 2364, the Elected One was Beata.

Within Starfleet, there was a hope that Angel I would one day become a member of the Federation due to its strategic position near the Romulan Neutral Zone. (TNG: "Angel One")

A golden ibex sculpture was seen in Beata's guest quarters.
This image of the capital city was also used to represent Starbase 515 in TNG: "Samaritan Snare" and the surface of Banea in VOY: "Ex Post Facto". This image of the planet was also used to represent Minos in TNG: "The Arsenal of Freedom".
According to the Star Trek: Star Charts, on page 66, the Angel system was located in or near Federation space, in the Beta Quadrant. This system, also known as Al Nair or Alpha Gruis, was a binary star system. Primary was a Class B star with a magnitude of +1, which was a hundred times brighter than Sol. Secondary was a Class B star.
