Captain Janeway's animal guide
As part of the Native American vision quest, an animal guide offers spiritual guidance. Noone can choose their own animal, the animal chooses them. Each one is unique, but does not represent the person. It would offend a guide if it's identity was revealed to others. Chakotay prefered not to say the name of his guide as it may be offended. Under the guidance of Chakotay, Katherine Janeway discovered her Animal guide was a salamander. B'Elanna Torres noted for trying to kill her guide. (VOY: "The Cloud")
