Anthony James (born 22 July 1942 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) is the actor who appeared in season one of Star Trek: The Next Generation, playing Subcommander Thei in the episode "The Neutral Zone".

James had previously made several appearances on the television western series Gunsmoke, most often playing the character of Elbert Moses. Among the fellow Star Trek performers he has appeared with in this series are Barry Atwater, John McLiam, and Charles Seel. Other shows he has guest-starred on include: The High Chaparral, starring Henry Darrow; a 1970 episode of Bonanza with William Lucking; a 1975 episode of The Rookies with TOS star William Shatner; Holmes and Yo-Yo, starring John Schuck; Starsky & Hutch, starring David Soul; Quincy, starring Robert Ito and Garry Walberg; Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, also featuring the likes of Michael Ansara, Paul Carr, Seamon Glass, Frank Gorshin, and James Sloyan; a 1985 episode of Simon & Simon with Jeff Corey; The A-Team, starring Dwight Schultz, Lance LeGault, Melinda Culea, and William Lucking; V, starring Duncan Regehr and Jeff Yagher; Hunter, starring Bruce Davison; Outlaws, starring William Lucking and Charles Napier; and Beauty and the Beast, starring Ron Perlman and Stephen McHattie.

He has also appeared in a number of major feature films. One of his earliest was the 1967 classic In the Heat of the Night, which also featured William Schallert, Clegg Hoyt, and Alan Oppenheimer in the cast. Subsequent films include P.J. (1968, with Brock Peters and Ken Lynch), ...tick...tick...tick... (1970, with Janet MacLachlan and Bernie Casey), High Plains Drifter (1973, with Marianna Hill and William O'Connell), Blue Thunder (1983, with Malcolm McDowell and James Read), and The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991, with John Fleck). His last known film role was in Clint Eastwood's 1992 Oscar-winning western, Unforgiven, opposite Saul Rubinek.
