Archaeology is the study of the past, particularly humanoid past culture by the examination of recovered material evidence, and is a course taught at Starfleet Academy. Archaeology and anthropology officer was a position on Starfleet starships in the 23rd century. The archaeology lab is one of the science labratories on Galaxy-class starships. Additionally, archaeological specialties exist. An example of this is medical archaeology; Roger Korby specialized in this, and was referred to by some as the Pasteur of the field. Among other achievements, his excavations of certain Orion ruins revolutionized immunological science. (TOS: "What Are Little Girls Made Of?")

In 2366, Marla Aster was ship's archaeologist aboard the USS Enterprise-D. She died that year while investigating subterranean ruins on the Koinonian homeworld. (TNG: "The Bonding")
