An artist was someone who produced art, such as paintings or drawings, as a profession or hobby.

Under Federation law, section seven gamma of the Twelfth Guarantee defined an artist as a person who creates an original artistic work. (VOY: "Author, Author")

In 2365, Data, while possessing the engrams of Doctor Ira Graves, described Graves, but as himself, as being "many things", including "scholar, artist, philosopher, lover, [and] genius." (TNG: "The Schizoid Man")

One of the members of Riva's chorus was described as the "artist" or "scholar". In his role as the artist, he was "the dreamer, the part that longs to see the beauty beyond the truth which is always the first duty of art." As he began to add that, "I am the poet who–", he was cut off by the "warrior" personae, who stated, "Artists, they tend to ramble, neglect the moment." (TNG: "Loud As A Whisper")

According to Jean-Luc Picard, his fifth grade reader taught that Bajorans were "architects and artists, builders and philosophers when Humans were not yet standing erect." (TNG: "Ensign Ro")

Following the Occupation of Bajor, Bajorans no longer followed their D'jarras or caste. For example, the Ih'valla were a caste of artists and sculptors, and were ranked higher than the Te'nari. According to Akorem Laan, "Artists have become soldiers, priests have become merchants, and farmers have become politicians."

When Kira Nerys was planning follow her D'jarra and move back to Bajor to become an artist in 2372, she had a friend in the capital city of Dahkur Province, where a lot of artists lived, who was willing to apprentice her. (DS9: "Accession")
