Barisa Prime was the inhabited prime planet in its star system. This system was located near the Federation-Tzenkethi border, in the Alpha Quadrant. The Helaspont Nebula was located in the same sector as this planet.

In the 24th century, this planet was home to a Federation colony. In late 2371, the USS Defiant received a truncated message from Barisa Prime indicating that the colony was being attacked by Tzenkethi warships. The transmission was actually fabricated by a Founder posing as Ambassador Krajensky, as part of an attempt to incite war between the Federation and the Tzenkethi. (DS9: "The Adversary")

"buh-RISS-us" was the pronunciation for this planet's name from the script pronunciation guide.

According to the Star Trek: Star Charts, on the chart "United Federation of Planets I", Barisa Prime was listed as a member planet of the Federation in 2378.
