Berengaria VII, also known as Berengaria, was the inhabited seventh planet in the Berengarius system of the Alpha Quadrant. Classified as M class, this Federation planet had no indigenous intelligent life, but possessed a flourishing ecosystem including a species of dragon-like flying reptiles.

Location[]

The Explored Galaxy

The location of Berengaria VII on "The Explored Galaxy" star chart

In 2293, the location of Berengaria VII in the Milky Way Galaxy was labeled in the star chart "The Explored Galaxy", which was on display in Captain James T. Kirk's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, okudagram)

History[]

Circa 2104, a Vulcan science vessel surveyed Berengaria VII, describing its dragon-like creatures as over two hundred meters in length and breathing fire. In December 2154, Berengaria VII was to be scouted by the Starfleet ship Enterprise NX-01 as the site of the first in a proposed series of starbases. However, an incident with an Orion trader superseded this mission. (ENT: "Bound")

At some point during the mid-23rd century, Spock had seen a "dragon" on Berengaria VII. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise")

As of late 2373, on the eve of the Dominion War, Berengaria's strategic importance for the Federation was on par with worlds like Andor, Vulcan, and Earth. Kai Winn rhetorically asked Captain Benjamin Sisko whether he would promise to sacrifice those strategic planets in order to protect Bajor from the Jem'Hadar. (DS9: "In the Cards")

Appendices[]

Background information[]

"bear-ren-GAR-ee-ah" was the pronunciation for this planet's name from the script pronunciation guide for "In the Cards".

According to Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I"), in 2378, Berengaria VII was listed as a Federation member.

Apocrypha[]

According to the The Worlds of the Federation (p. 86), Berengaria VII had three moons, "Alpha", "Beta", and "Gamma", and orbited a red giant star. It eventually became a Federation colony world, and subsequently a member world in its own right.

The Pocket ENT novel Beneath the Raptor's Wing had this planet as the site of a starbase and it was fought over twice by the Coalition of Planets and the Romulans during the first year of the Earth-Romulan War.

Elias Vaughn, the new first officer of Deep Space 9 who first appeared in Avatar, Book One, was established to have been born on Berengaria VII in Twilight. In the Worlds of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine novella Fragments and Omens, the dragon-like reptile indigenous to the planet was called Draco Berengarius. The same novel also mentioned that Vaughn was once attacked by one. In 2381, Berengaria was one of the worlds attacked by the Borg during the events of Star Trek: Destiny, which was followed up in the Pocket TNG novel Losing the Peace.
