The location of Berengaria VII on "The Explored Galaxy" wall chart

Berengaria VII (or Berengaria) was the seventh planet in the Berengarius planetary system. This inhabited planet was classified as Class M. The planet was a valuable Federation world that was on a par with Vulcan, Andor, and Earth. Berengaria VII's location in the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted on a Federation star chart in 2293. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise", Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, DS9: "In the Cards", ENT: "Bound")

History

Over fifty years before 2154, a Vulcan science vessel surveyed Berengaria VII. In the files from the mission, this planet was described as a Class M planet with a flourishing ecosystem devoid of intelligent life. However, the files did mentioned that a species of flying reptiles, over two hundred meters in length, breathed fire.

In December 2154, prior to the founding of the Federation, Berengaria VII was to be scouted by the Starfleet ship Enterprise NX-01 as the site of one of a proposed chain of Earth starbases. However, an incident with the Orions postponed or canceled this mission. (ENT: "Bound")

At some point prior to 2267, Spock encountered a dragon-like creature on the planet, confirming the original story. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise")

In 2373, Kai Winn Adami asked Captain Benjamin Sisko rhetorically whether the Federation would sacrifice Berengaria to protect Bajor from the Dominion. (DS9: "In the Cards")

Background

The Explored Galaxy

This chart was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were: TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game" and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".

Star Trek: Star Charts

The Berengarius system was located in or near Federation space, in the Alpha Quadrant. In 2378, Berengaria VII was a Federation member. ("United Federation of Planets I")

Apocrypha

The Pocket ENT novel Beneath the Raptor's Wing has this planet as the site of a starbase and it was fought over twice by the Coalition of Planets and the Romulans during the first year of the Earth-Romulan War.

Elias Vaughn was born on Berengaria VII and lived there as a child.
