Commander Branch, a Human male
Commander Branch was the Starfleet officer in charge of the Epsilon IX monitoring station. Branch was "absorbed" by the V'Ger probe as it passed near the station in the early 2270s. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
Background
Branch was played by David Gautreaux, the actor who had originally been contracted to play Xon in Star Trek: Phase II. When that production was made into the first of the Star Trek films, Gautreaux was kept on, but to play a non-starring role, as Branch.
According to Gene Roddenberry's novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Branch's rank was lieutenant commander.
