A brother-in-law is a relation of a sort among Humans recognized during the mid-20th century.

In 1947, Lieutenant General Rex Denning of the US Army Air Corps remarked upon the similarity of Quark's behavior to that of his brother-in-law, a car salesman. (DS9: "Little Green Men")
