Robert Bruce McCleery (born 26 April 1959; age 64), often credited simply as Bruce McCleery, was the Director of Photography for the Second Unit of Star Trek. [1] This was his sixth collaboration with Star Trek's Main Unit Director of Photography, Dan Mindel. McCleery previously worked with Mindel as Chief Lighting Technician on the films Shanghai Noon, Stuck on You, The Skeleton Key, Domino, and Mission: Impossible III. The latter film, like Star Trek, was directed by J.J. Abrams. McCleery was also Second Unit Director of Photography on Stuck on You and was an additional photographer on The Skeleton Key, Domino, and M:i:III.

McCleery began his career as best boy on television movies and feature films in the 1980s. Throughout the 1990s, he worked as a gaffer (or Chief Lighting Technician) on such films as Wild at Heart (1990, featuring W. Morgan Sheppard), The People Under the Stairs (1991, featuring Bill Cobbs, Jeremy Roberts and Sean Whalen), Camp Nowhere (starring Christopher Lloyd and featuring Jonathan Frakes and Kate Mulgrew), The Pagemaster (also starring Christopher Lloyd along with Ed Begley, Jr. and featuring the voices of Whoopi Goldberg, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Picardo, Patrick Stewart, and Frank Welker), How to Make an American Quilt (starring Winona Ryder, Jean Simmons, and Alfre Woodard), Independence Day (featuring Tim Kelleher, Carlos LaCamara, Frank Novak, Randy Oglesby, Leland Orser, Robert Pine, Raphael Sbarge, Bill Smitrovich, and Brent Spiner), One Eight Seven (starring Clifton Collins, Jr., Jack Kehler, and Tony Plana), Payback (1999, starring Gregg Henry and John Glover), and Mumford (featuring Alfre Woodard).

His other credits as a gaffer during the 1990s included TV movies such as Barbarians at the Gate (starring Joanna Cassidy), And the Band Played On (featuring Christopher Carroll, Reg E. Cathey, David Clennon, Richard Fancy, Ken Jenkins, Thomas Kopache, Clyde Kusatsu, Dakin Matthews, Lawrence Monoson, Jeffrey Nordling Sierra Pecheur, and Saul Rubinek), and Without Warning (directed by Robert Iscove and featuring Ron Canada and John de Lancie). He also worked on the Emmy Award-nominated CBS mini-series Return to Lonesome Dove and Hotel Room.

McCleery's more recently worked as gaffer/Chief Lighting Technician on such films as Deliver Us From Eva (starring Gabrielle Union), The Core (starring Bruce Greenwood and Alfre Woodard), and Friday Night Lights. In the meantime, he continued making a name for himself as a cinematographer: in addition to his camera work with Dan Mindel, he directed additional photography (and was also Chief Light Technician) on The Rundown (2003, starring The Rock) and was Director of Photography on Black Dawn (2005). He more recently directed photography on a number of upcoming independent features, including Reservations (starring Ray Wise and Pavel Lychnikoff).
