Cadmium selenide (CdSe), or cadmium salt, was one of the substances revealed by USS Enterprise-D spectral analysis to comprise the sentient inorganic microbrain lifeform of Velara III. According to Geordi LaForge, this compound meant that the microbrain emitted charge when lit. (TNG: "Home Soil")

The Enterprise computer calls it "cadmium selenide" but Geordi later says it's "cadmium salt". In using the term "cadmium salt", he may be referring to the fact that cadmium selenide can have a crystalline structure that looks like rock salt.
