It has been theorized that the "Captain Proton" novelization was based on the early 1950s Sci-fi series "Captain Video and His Video Rangers", with some cosmetic changes. The series shared the same campy themes and post WWII-Cold War clichés. A robot also existed in that series by the name "Tobor".
