A car was a type of general purpose automobile typically used by family households in everyday situations, such as the transport of cargo or individuals. They were sold by car salesmen. Aside from civilian use, cars were also used for military purposes, such as the American Jeep or the German Volkswagen Kübelwagen.

History[]

Cars were powered by the internal combustion engine which used a fossil fuel called gasoline to run the through the first half of the 21st century. (ENT: "Carpenter Street")

In 1930, Bobby Cabe returned a car he borrowed to a friend's house. It was there he was arrested for the murder of Alfredo Pedillo Jose. (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")

That same year in Lee's Summit, highway patrolmen reported to a newspaper about many people driving with out license tags on their cars. The most common excuse given was due to the fact that they expected to be drafted and didn't want to spend fifteen to twenty dollars for a car they won't use. (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")

That same year, when Spock and Kirk were crossing a New York City street on foot, a car almost strikes Spock, the angry motorist then slammed on the brakes, causing his tires to screech, and he shouted at Spock, telling him to watch where he's going. (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")

In an alternate 1944, when Alicia Travers seen the work that Nicky Giorgo did on Carmine's gunshot wound, she told Carmine that "he should stick to cars." (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")

In the 1947, Denning's brother-in-law was a car salesman. Denning thought he wasn't good at his job. (DS9: "Little Green Men")

During a trip back in time to Detroit circa 2004, Jonathan Archer tells T'Pol that Humans had known since the 1970s that Earth's fossil fuel supply was limited. He begins to tell her about a noteworthy event in 2061 related to this issue, but his explanation is interrupted by their mission.

Jimmy was killed in 1953 for attempting to break into a car with a crowbar. (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")

While visiting Earth in 1986, James Kirk was nearly hit by a taxicab. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

Cars were used quite often by police departments across 20th century Earth, and such vehicles were modified to include flashing lights, sirens, and other devices for their needs. When several of the crew of the USS Voyager visited the Earth of this era, Captain Kathryn Janeway asked Lieutenant Tom Paris what they would need to pass for locals and he replied "Nice clothes, a fast car and lots of money." (VOY: "Future's End", "11:59"; ENT: "Carpenter Street")

In 2000, Shannon O'Donnel told Henry Janeway that the classical age wasn't so special because there were no cars in existence at the time. (VOY: "11:59")

In 2024 in Los Angeles, there was a billboard sign about a lawyer that could be contacted if one had an injury as the result of a car accident. (PIC: "Assimilation")

In La Barre, a National Police officer named Leclerc responded to an emergency phone call from the Borg Queen; and he arrived at the location that the CSS La Sirena had crashed. After a brief altercation, Doctor Agnes Jurati gave him a drug that helped erase his memory of the incident, and she, Cristóbal Rios, Seven of Nine and Raffaela Musiker returned his unconscious body to his car. At a gala, Cristóbal Rios told Raffaela Musiker how crazy 21st century L.A. was, because of all of the cars with their loud horns honking. (PIC: "Two of One")

That same year on a street in Sanctuary District A, when Michael Webb asked Benjamin Sisko and Julian Bashir to help him gather a rally, a car could be seen parked on the other side of a fence; possibly outside the Sanctuary District. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I")

The hovercar eventually replaced the ground-based car for general use in 2036, although ground-based cars were still quite common. (VOY: "The 37's")

During the 2130s, Charles Tucker III used to drive his first car out to Chatkin Point and park along the shoreline and stare at the moon with his girlfriend. Tucker later shared the memory with Kaitaama while trapped inside a Retellian escape pod that was about the same size as the car. (ENT: "Precious Cargo")

In 2152 in orbit of an alien planet, the Enterprise, while scanning for the communicator signal to locate Jonathan Archer and Malcolm Reed, find that they were in a district far away from where they had landed their shuttlepod. Since they couldn't have got that far on foot, Hoshi speculated they may have taken a train or car. (ENT: "The Communicator")

In 2153, Charles Tucker III had a dream that he witnessed the death of his sister Elizabeth Tucker, who was killed in Florida by a Xindi weapon. In his dream, she is sitting at a table that appears to be at an outdoor restaurant, and there is a car parked in the nearby parking lot. (ENT: "The Xindi")

In early 2154, after realizing Phlox could be extremely persuasive, Charles Tucker III told Phlox "remind me never to buy a car from you". (ENT: "The Forgotten")

In 2259, there were a variety of cars that could be seen on the news viewscreen in a public space on Kiley 279. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds")

When the USS Enterprise was going to conduct an investigation of the distress call sent by the USS Peregrine, Captain Christopher Pike jokingly told his crew that they'll get in the station wagon and take a road trip. He then pretends he's a parent talking to his children, and pointing his tongs at them he says: "Don't make me turn this car around!" (SNW: "All Those Who Wander")

In 2266, when a landing party from the USS Enterprise beams down to the streets of a newly discovered world, many decrepit cars decorated the landscape. One car was even turned completely upside down. (TOS: "Miri")

In 2268, the inhabitants of planet 892-IV advertised a brand of car called the Jupiter 8. (TOS: "Bread and Circuses")

The same year, when Spock, Kirk and McCoy beamed down to Sigma Iotia II, they are nearly struck by a car. (TOS: "A Piece of the Action")

The Iotians were driving cars identical to those driven in the United States of America on Earth, in the 1920s. One such car was a Flivver, as Spock called it. (TOS: "A Piece of the Action")

That same year, the Ekosians also had cars. They were similar in design to many of the cars from Earth in 1944. (TOS: "Patterns of Force")

In 2365, while trapped in a hotel from the novel Hotel Royale, Texas told Data that he drove to the hotel in his car, which was a '91 Cadillac with only eighty thousand miles on it. Later, after Data beat him at a game of craps, Texas asked him if it was something personal, suggesting that he was angry with him because he wouldn't show him his car. (TNG: "The Royale")

In the Julian Bashir, Secret Agent holoprogram, the spy gets to use many cars, including limousines. (DS9: "A Simple Investigation")

In 2380, the Gelrakians expressed interest in having a death race to replace their tradition of trial by combat. They further expressed interest in making the car out of crystal. (LD: "Temporal Edict")

That same year, Beckett Mariner was telling some other Starfleet officers of her time at Starfleet Academy, in which she and another cadet that was a friend of hers, stole a special old car that was owned by by Professor Saul Rubichik. She then drove the car into the bay. Ottessa Warren didn't find the humor in Mariner's story, since she knew the Professor and even spoke at his funeral service. She even told her that his car was his life. (LD: "Much Ado About Boimler")

Thaddeus Troi-Riker was born on a starship, and was fascinated with the concept of having a homeworld and the lifestyle that came with it. Cars was one of many things he was fascinated by. He even had at least couple toy cars. His mother saved them after he died on Nepenthe, and they were displayed on a shelf in his bedroom. (PIC: "Nepenthe")

Two cars passed Jonathan Archer in a street in Chinatown in a deleted scene in ENT: "The Expanse".

Alternate reality[]

In the early 2240s of the alternate reality, James T. Kirk's stepfather owned an antique Corvette, which Kirk drove into a chasm.

In 2258, a car drove by Starfleet Academy just before James T. Kirk took the Kobayashi Maru scenario for a third time. (Star Trek)

The following year, Doctor McCoy advised now-Captain Kirk, "You don't rob a bank when the get-away car has a flat tire," metaphorically referring to Kirk planning to infiltrate Qo'noS even though the USS Enterprise's warp core had broken down. Also, when Kirk and Khan were planning on space jumping from the Enterprise to the USS Vengeance, Montgomery Scott told Kirk that the doorway into the Vengeance was very small, and that making a jump successfully would be like "jumping from a moving car, off a bridge and into a shot glass."

Khan was nearly struck by a car when he was running from Spock, who was chasing him through the streets of San Francisco and later atop airborne garbage barges. (Star Trek Into Darkness)
