The Cardassian rank system was based on at least three known ranks (legate, gul, and glinn). While it is assumed that Cardassians could hold the same rank, it was the nature of their duties that defined their military hierarchy (e.g. prefect of a territory, commander of an Order, etc.).

Legate

Parn

Legate Parn in 2370.

Legate was a rank given to members of the Central Command and high-ranking flag officers in the Cardassian military.

Gul

Macet

Gul Macet in 2367.

Madred

Gul Madred in 2369.

Gul was a military rank held by the commander of a vessel or installation. Guls may have had additional responsibilities, such as leading an Order, or acting as governor of an occupied territory. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I", "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night")

A ship's Gul routinely took a cut of the profits from the cargo that his or her ship was transporting. Guls were often expected to entertain guests aboard their ships. (DS9: "Return to Grace")

Glinn

Boheeka

Glinn Boheeka in 2370.

Glinn was a military rank below gul. Glinns were often served as first officers and Damar was promoted directly from glinn to gul, so it seems likely they were mid-ranking officers, equivalent to a Starfleet commander. Often, two Glinns reported to a Gul.

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual lists another Cardassian rank below glinn, "gil," presumably a low officer grade or noncom rank. Cardassian space stations such as Terok Nor were typically equipped with enough lifeboats for officers down to, and including, the rank of gil. The Star Trek: Terok Nor novel Day of the Vipers introduces the ranks of dalin, dal, and jagul and also refers to the rank of gil.
