The Cardassian rank system is based on at least three known ranks (legate, gul, and glinn). It is assumed that while Cardassians may hold the same rank, it is the nature of their duties that defines their military hierarchy (e.g. prefect of a territory, commander of an Order, etc.).
Legate
Legate is a rank given to members of the Central Command and high-ranking flag officers in the Cardassian military. This rank is roughly equivalent to a Starfleet Admiral.
- Legate Broca
- Legate Damar
- Legate Dukat
- Legate Tekeny Ghemor
- Legate Goris
- Legate Hovat
- Legate Kell
- Legate Krim
- Legate Parn
- Legate Porania
- Legate Turrel
- The Cardassian rank legate may have been influenced by a old Roman rank, legatus, anglicized to legate. A legatus was a deputy to a general or governor, and the commander of a legion in the army was called a "legatus legionis". "Legate" is also used as a diplomatic title, especially by the Vatican. It has been suggested that legates may be civilian, but we have never seen any legate who was not a member of the military. Legates do fulfill governmental duties, but in Cardassian culture, the military is the government.
Gul
Gul is a military rank held by the commander of a vessel or installation. The rank's closest approximation is a Starfleet Captain, but guls may have additional responsibilities, such as leading an Order, or acting as governor of an occupied territory.
A ship's gul will routinely take a cut of the profits from the cargo that his or her ship is transporting. Guls are often expected to entertain guests aboard their ships. (DS9: "Return to Grace")

Glinn
Glinn is a military rank below gul, probably a junior officer grade, although as glinns are often seen serving as first officer it is also possible they are mid-ranking officers, equivalent to a Starfleet commander. Oftentimes, two glinns will report to a gul (given the Cardassian penchant for organizing in threes).

- Glinn Borven
- Glinn Corak
- Glinn Daro
- Glinn Damar

- The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual lists another Cardassian rank below glinn, "gil," presumably a low officer grade or noncom rank. Cardassian space stations such as Terok Nor are typically equipped with enough lifeboats for officers down to, and including, the rank of gil.
