Galaxy class bridge conn ops

The two forward stations on the bridge of a Galaxy-class starship. Ops was usually on the left, with conn on the right

The flight control officer, also known as conn officer, or simply conn/helm, was the crewmember on a Federation starship assigned the duty of piloting the vessel. This position combined the roles of the navigator and helmsman used previously. The term "conn" was also used to refer to the flight control station itself. (Star Trek: The Next Generation) As a staff officer, Lieutenant junior grade Tom Paris held the position of chief conn officer aboard USS Voyager. (VOY: "Thirty Days")

During the rewrite of Tuvok's Insurrection Alpha holoprogram, B'Elanna Torres suggested that "there is room in every good story for a little bit of passion." Paris agreed, saying that "you know, maybe you're on to something. I could add a steamy love scene between the Starfleet conn officer and the Maquis engineer." Torres sarcastically responded, "Oh, that's realistic." (VOY: "Worst Case Scenario")
