Couch

A couch

A couch or sofa was a piece of upholstered furniture, similar in form to a bench, used for sitting on by two or more individuals.

A Romulan Bird-of-Prey that played a prime factor in the Neutral Zone Incursion of 2266 had a couch on the spacecraft's bridge. At one point, the vessel's commander briefly sat on it. After a Romulan centurion was wounded in the same room, however, he lay on the couch, where he later died from his injuries. (TOS: "Balance of Terror")

This item of furniture was consistently referred to as a "couch" in the revised final draft script of "Balance of Terror".

In an Arcturian rendition of Macbeth held on Planet Q in 2266, King Duncan was lying on a couch when Macbeth murdered him.

In the final revised draft script of "The Conscience of the King", this item of furniture was described as a "curved Arcturian couch" owned by King Duncan.

Later, actress Lenore Karidian, who had played Lady Macbeth in the play, and Captain James T. Kirk, who had observed the performance, sat on a couch at a cocktail party on Planet Q. (TOS: "The Conscience of the King")

This couch wasn't mentioned in the aforementioned teleplay of "The Conscience of the King", which instead described James Kirk and Lenore Karidian as instead being near a window.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard's ready room aboard the USS Enterprise-D also featured a couch. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint", "Qpid", "Chain Of Command, Part II" et al.) Another couch was owned by the O'Brien family on space station Deep Space 9, and yet another was owned by Ensign Harry Kim aboard the USS Voyager. (DS9: "The Darkness and the Light"; VOY: "Lineage")

A home video showed Jeremy Aster pretending his kitten Patches was a captain landing on a sofa. (TNG: "The Bonding")

Quark told Constable Odo that, when The Circle became dominant, Odo could simply turn himself into a couch rather than have to leave Deep Space 9. (DS9: "The Circle")

The holographic recreation of Leonardo da Vinci kept a red couch in his workshop on an alien planet in 2374. (VOY: "Concerning Flight")

The meeting room aboard the USS Prometheus featured two couches. In 2374, The Doctor was interrogated by Rekar and Nevala in this room. (VOY: "Message in a Bottle")

After Tom Paris joked that – if Voyager went through a wormhole into the Alpha Quadrant – he and the rest of the starship's crew might end up in Harry Kim's parents' living room, Kathryn Janeway told Kim that he might have to ask his mother to move the sofa. (VOY: "Endgame")

Couches could also be used for sleep. Furel decided he and Lupaza would sleep on the O'Briens' couch to guard Kira Nerys, resolving that, though it was "a little short," the couch was at least as comfortable as their bed. (DS9: "The Darkness and the Light") Harry Kim offered Tom Paris the use of his couch to sleep on after the latter officer had quarreled with a pregnant B'Elanna Torres. (VOY: "Lineage") When a pah-wraith possessed the body of Keiko O'Brien, it forced Keiko's husband Miles to perform work on its behalf. Disgusted, he stated that he would sleep on the couch, but it told him not to be childish and that they would sleep on the bed as always in case Molly had a nightmare and came running in. (DS9: "The Assignment")
