A cyrogenic open-heart procedure was a surgical procedure in use during the late 2260s. The technique involved a complete transfusion requiring a great deal of blood.
Dr. Leonard McCoy performed this procedure in 2268 on Vulcan Ambassador Sarek while en route to the Babel Conference following repeated heart attacks due to a malfunction in one of his heart valves. (TOS: "Journey to Babel")
