D'Amato was a human male assigned to the USS Enterprise-D in 2366. He held a rank of ensign, and worked in ship security.

As one of the hundreds of crew members affected by Sarek's telepathy, D'Amato channeled the anguish of the ambassador into an act of insubordination to his commanding officer, Lieutenant Worf. For his behavior, Ensign D'Amato received a written reprimand. For officers, like Commander William Riker, this was disturbing as the ensign was noted for his exemplary conduct as an officer. (TNG: "Sarek")

Though it is never explicitly stated, one can speculate that this reprimand is later removed from D'Amato's record for his actions could be construed as not of his own making, but rather the result of another, in this case Ambassador Sarek. The same could be argued for the hundreds of other crew members likewise impacted.
It is interesting to note that there were two D'Amatos who served aboard two different starships with the same name.
