Daniel was a biblical figure in ancient Human history who was once thrown into a lion's den for refusing to worship a Persian king as a god.
Leonard McCoy referred to Daniel's banishment to "the lion's den" when he learned that Captain Kirk was being held prisoner by the Providers of Triskelion in 2268, adding that the Commander Spock would need a medical officer to accompany him.
Spock recalled that Daniel had "only his faith" during his imprisonment, but that he welcomed the doctor's company just the same. (TOS: "The Gamesters of Triskelion")
