David Assael (12 January 19471 November 2021; age 74) was the writer who wrote the story and together with Robert L. McCullough the teleplay for the Star Trek: The Next Generation second season episode "The Icarus Factor". Assael was interviewed by Pat Jankiewicz for The Official Star Trek: The Next Generation Magazine issue 22 in April 1993 for the article "David Assael: Runner with 'The Icarus Factor'".

Assael previously wrote stories and teleplays for episodes of The Love Boat (1978), The White Shadow (1980, one episode being directed by Victor Lobl), Chicago Story (1982), St. Elsewhere (1983), Miami Vice (1985), Knots Landing (1985), and A Year in the Life (1988, starring Richard Kiley). He was one of the co-writers of the drama The London Connection in 1979 and wrote the television drama Chicago Story in 1981.

Following his work on Star Trek, Assael wrote episodes for the television series Homefront, Picket Fences, Northern Exposure (1990-1993), Baywatch Nights, Dellaventura (1997), and Call of the Wild (2000).
