Diamond, Arena

A raw diamond

A diamond is a carbon crystal. Due to the considerable heat and pressure required to form diamonds, they are quite rare in nature. This, combined with their inherent beauty, made them objects of great value for many centuries. In addition, they are one of the hardest substance known in the universe, which made them valuable for a variety of industrial uses.

In 2266, according to Harcourt Fenton Mudd, lithium crystals were worth three hundred times their weight in diamonds. (TOS: "Mudd's Women")

In 2267, Kirk used diamond projectiles in a primitive cannon against a Gorn captain. (TOS: "Arena")

Tritanium was said to be 21.4 times harder than diamond. (TOS: "Obsession") As well, cast rodinium was called the hardest substances known to man, suggesting that it too was harder than diamond. (TOS: "Balance of Terror")

Captain Kirk stated that diamonds were "perhaps the hardest substance known in the universe". Spock stated that diamonds were "the hardest known substance". (TOS: "Arena") The Federation knew of tritanium since at least encountering the Axanar cargo ships. (ENT: "Fight or Flight") The discrepancy between these statements are not fully understood.
