Dixon Hill

Picard as Dixon Hill.

The character Dixon Hill was a 20th Century detective who first appeared in the short story The Big Good-Bye, published on Earth in the pulp magazine Amazing Detective Stories in 1934. The second Dixon Hill story, The Long Dark Tunnel was published in 1936. Additional stories include The National Sheriff, The Listening Man, The Parrot Claw, and The Black Orchid. These stories were written by author Tracy Tormé and published by Broht & Forrester. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye", "The Emissary", VOY: "Author, Author")

Dixon Hill was a hero of Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the USS Enterprise-D, since he was a child. Fascinated by the two-fisted gumshoe, he programmed a holodeck simulation of the character. He was able to explore his fascination with Dixon Hill following the upgrade of the Enterprise-D holodecks in 2364. The story takes place in San Francisco, California, 1941, where the user plays the character of private investigator Dixon Hill. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye)

Dixon Hill appears to be an homage to Sam Spade.
