A Dopterian pickpocket (left) apprehended by Constable Odo (2369).

The Dopterians are an unscrupulous humanoid species found throughout the Alpha Quadrant. They are distant relatives of the Ferengi, who share a similar four-lobed brain structure and with it an inablility to be read by telepathic species such as Betazoids.

In 2369, Constable Odo correctly deduced that a Dopterian pickpocket was responsible for the theft of Ambassador Lwaxana Troi's latinum hair brooch aboard Deep Space 9, since she was unable to discern any emotions of guilt in her surroundings. (DS9: "The Forsaken")

The USS Enterprise-D encountered a Dopterian named Gorta the same year, who was a discarded accomplice of the Duras sisters. The trio had been illegally mining magnesite on the Pakled-claimed planet Kalla III. (TNG: "Firstborn")

In 2372, a Dopterian robbed numerous living quarters aboard Deep Space 9, including those of Lieutenant Commander Worf. He was discovered by Worf moving through a crawlspace near his quarters and was subsequently arrested. (DS9: "The Bar Association")

Background

The Dopterians apparently have an automated attack weapon known as a "Dopterian interceptor" according to DS9: "Business as Usual". The name was not verbally given on screen, however, the attacking device was identified as such in the script.
