The Drill platform was a part of the Romulan mining ship Narada that would be lowered into the atmosphere of a planet or planetoid for mining operations. It was used to drill a hole in the crust of the planet Vulcan in the alternate timeline enabling Nero to shoot red matter to core of the planet resulting in its destruction by a black hole. It was destroyed above San Francisco on Earth when Spock in the "Jellyfish" severed the cable connecting it to the Narada and it crashed into San Francisco Bay near the Golden Gate Bridge.
