S.G. Dukat was a Cardassian military officer who ruled Bajor during the Bajoran Occupation. He later ruled Cardassia Prime during its membership in the Dominion. After his defeat during Operation Return, he became a disciple of the Pah-wraiths, and was killed in their final confrontation with the Emissary.

Career

At the rank of gul, Dukat was the commander of Terok Nor, the mining station command post in orbit of Bajor that would later be known as Deep Space Nine, and had the position of Prefect of the planet. During his time in this position of power over the subjugated Bajorans, Dukat was responsible for many atrocities, and became one of the most hated Cardassians by the people of Bajor. (DS9: "Emissary")

According to Dukat, he was convinced that a gentler approach was needed to deal with the problems of the Bajoran Resistance. In his first month, he cut labor camp output quotas by fifty percent, abolished child labor, and attempted to improve conditions at the camps. However, the Resistance continued its activities, and attempted his assassination on many occasions. This eventually left Dukat with a deep-rooted hatred for the Bajoran people. ("Waltz")

Dukat strongly opposed the move to withdraw from Bajor in 2369. ("Cardassians"). After the withdrawal, Dukat became the commander of the Cardassian Second Order. He became responsible for the Cardassian military's interactions with the Federation for the next three years. Dukat became implicated in the supply of illegal weapons to Cardassian citizens in the Demilitarized Zone in 2370. The Maquis abducted him, and kept Dukat until he was rescued by Commander Benjamin Sisko. Dukat was proven innocent when it was revealed it was in fact the Cardassian Central Command who was responsible for the treaty violation. ("The Maquis, Part I")

When the Cardassian Union underwent a revolution in 2372, Dukat sided with the winners, the new democratic leadership of the Detapa Council. He gained a position as legate, and was made Chief Military Advisor to the Council. Following the Klingon invasion of the Union, Dukat was able to evacuate the Council members to Federation space aboard the Prakesh, with the assistance of the USS Defiant. ("The Way of the Warrior").

Later that year, Dukat, accompanied by Kira Nerys, discovered the wreck of the Ravinok, a transport that had been lost several years earlier with Dukat's mistress, Tora Naprem, and his half-Bajoran daughter, Tora Ziyal, aboard. Initially intending to kill both Ziyal and Naprem, had they survived, Dukat only found his daughter alive and eventually decided to return with her to Cardassia, despite the effect it would have on his career. ("Indiscretion")

As a result of his actions, Dukat was demoted and given command of a small freighter, the Groumall. His family disowned him, and Cardassian society shunned him. Determined to regain his former power, Dukat captured a Klingon Bird-of-Prey following the destruction of the outpost at Korma, and began attempting to drive the Klingon military from Cardassian space, against the express orders of the Council. ("Return to Grace")

By 2373, Dukat had become convinced that the only way to regain Cardassia's former glory was for them to join the Dominion. He conducted secret deals with the Dominion, and negotiated their alliance. ("By Inferno's Light"). Dukat became the new leader of Cardassia under the Dominion, ruling during the start of the Dominion War. Taking part in many early victories, Dukat found himself commanding much of the war effort after retaking Terok Nor from the Federation. ("Call to Arms"). When Starfleet retook the station during Operation Return, Dukat - half-deranged by his rapid change of fortune - remained behind following the murder of Ziyal at the hands of Damar, his second-in-command. ("The Sacrifice of Angels")

Charged with war crimes, Dukat was to be taken to Starbase 621 aboard the USS Honshu - however, that vessel was intercepted by Cardassian vessels enroute, and Dukat and Sisko, who was to speak at his trial, were forced down on a nearby planet in an escape pod. Having descended into madness after Ziyal's death, Dukat suffered from hallucinations and fits of paranoia, attempting to kill Sisko, before escaping in a shuttlecraft. ("Waltz")

Dukat returned to Cardassia Prime in late 2374, having immersed himself in the religion of the Pah-wraiths. Dukat enacted an ancient Bajoran ritual to release one of the Wraiths, and travelled to Deep Space Nine to release it into the Celestial Temple via an Orb. In the process, Dukat killed Jadzia Dax, and caused the wormhole to collapse. ("Tears of the Prophets"). Following this, Dukat retreated to station Empok Nor, where he founded a community of members of the Cult of the Pah-wraiths. He fathered another half-Bajoran child with one of the Bajoran women there and then tried to kill her. When Dukat was exposed as a false believer, he fled again. ("Covenant")

In late 2375, Dukat returned to Cardassia Prime to undergo cosmetic surgery in order to pose as a Bajoran farmer, Anjohl Tennan, and gained the confidence of Kai Winn Adami. He slowly convinced her to join him as a follower of the Pah-wraiths, and the two plotted to release the Pah-wraiths from their imprisonment, via the text of the Book of the Kosst Amojan. ("The Changing Face of Evil"). Led by the book to the Fire Caves, they attempted to release the Pah-wraiths, and use them to gain ultimate power. Winn poisoned Dukat as a sacrifice, but Dukat was imbued with the spirit of one of the Wraiths, and killed her for her deception. Dukat was killed when Benjamin Sisko drove him into the flames of the Fire Caves. ("What You Leave Behind")

Family and Personal Life

Dukat's father was arrested and executed by the Cardassian government. Dukat blamed Obsidian Order operative Elim Garak for his father's death and maintained bitterness toward him for decades. ("The Wire"). Dukat was married and had seven children with his wife. ("The Maquis, Part I"). One of his son's names was Mekor. ("Defiant")

During Dukat's years as Prefect on Terok Nor, he kept many Bajoran comfort women. One of these was Kira Meru, who Dukat fell in love with. Years later Dukat formed an attraction to Meru's daughter, Kira Nerys, the first officer of Deep Space Nine. ("Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night")

Towards the end of the Occupation, Dukat fell in love with another Bajoran woman, Tora Naprem, and the two had a daughter named Tora Ziyal. Dukat sent the pair to Lissepia in 2366 and their ship was captured by the Breen. Ziyal survived and was forced to mine ore on Dozaria until Dukat rescued her in 2372. ("Indiscretion")

After returning to Cardassia Prime with his half-Bajoran daughter, Dukat was severely ostracized. His wife and children left him and his mother disowned him. ("Return to Grace")

Dukat also formed a strange relationship with Benjamin Sisko, whom Dukat saw as his friend, and viewed him with a great deal of respect, although that view was not shared by Sisko. ("Waltz")

In the last few weeks of his life, Dukat became involved with Kai Winn Adami, while posing as a Bajoran farmer. ("Strange Bedfellows")

Dukat was fond of Bajoran springwine and didactic theater. ("Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night")
