A duonetic field, while a form of energy itself, was a field that inhibits energy flow and was capable of disabling virtually all 24th century Federation technology in a large area. It could be caused naturally by the presence of astatine, or artificially created by a small generator.

Alixus, a philosopher who was against the use of technology, once used an artificially generated duonetic field to strand herself and her community on a remote planet in order to "cure" them of what she perceived to be their over-reliance on technology. Her duonetic field was disabled by Miles O'Brien in 2370. (DS9: "Paradise")

The term "duonetic field" was devised by André Bormanis. He later recalled, "I had to come up with some sort of 'Tech' field that would short out the instruments... I came up with the 'rapidly fluctuating electromagnetic field pulse', but Colm Meaney (as O'Brien) had to say it about 15 times in the script! I pulled my hair out until I finally realised I'd have to invent something, so I called it a 'duonetic field', which was a play on the 'duotronic' circuitry from the original USS Enterprise." (Star Trek Monthly issue 25, p. 39)
