Ekos was an inhabited planet in an unnamed system. It was the homeworld for the Ekosians, a pre-warp humanoid species. Ekos was located closer to its primary than the sister planet Zeon.

In the mid-23rd century, Ekos was in the throes of anarchy. Dispatched by the United Federation of Planets to the upheaval in the mid-2260s as a cultural observer, noted historian John Gill chose to abandon the non-interference policy, believing a modified form of National Socialism could be installed to impose order without the disastrous results wrought to German culture in the years leading up to Earth's Second World War. Gill then proceeded to establish a passive version of the Nazi state, complete with recreations of such notorious German organizations as the SS, using the forms, symbols and uniforms of 20th century Earth.

Soon enough, however, the inherent opportunities for abuse of power within such a system reverted the Ekosian government to the established fascist pattern and the Ekosians began a genocide campaign against the neighboring planet Zeon. (TOS: "Patterns of Force")

Background information[]

The term "ekos" was also a word in ancient and modern Greek (spelled oikos), meaning "house" or "home".

According to StarTrek.com, Ekos was located in the M34 Alpha system; [1] however, the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 230) located the planet in the M43 Alpha system. Furthermore, the latter source identified Ekos as a class M planet. Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 155)

Apocrypha[]

According to the Star Trek Maps (p. 27) and The Worlds of the Federation (p. 122), the name of the system was M43-Alpha. It was a trinary star system, Ekos being the fourth planet. According to Star Trek Maps, the total population of the two planets was 16.1 billion.

According to FASA's The Federation sourcebook, Ekos is the third planet in the M43-Alpha system.
