Enantiodromia was a therapeutic term meaning "conversion into the opposite," whereby a person attempted to alter their personality in response to a trauma.
In 2368, Deanna Troi diagnosed a young boy named Timothy, the only survivor of the research vessel SS Vico with enantiodromia, when Timothy attempted to emulate the android Data in an effort to deal with the deaths of his parents. Troi suggested to Data that, as this was a normal part of Timothy's greiving process, Data should encourage Timothy in his efforts to become more android-like, and that Timothy would eventually be able to come to terms with his loss. (TNG: "Hero Worship")
