Erika Benteen was a Starfleet officer, who formerly served as Admiral Leyton's executive officer and later as his adjutant. In 2372, Leyton promoted her to captain and assigned her command of the Federation starship USS Lakota. Benteen was one of over 400 Starfleet personnel reassigned by Leyton in preparation for his attempted coup d'etat of the Federation.
As Leyton's protege and one of his closest friends, Benteen believed that Leyton's plan to overthrow the Federation government was necessary to ensure that the proper measures against a Dominion invasion would be taken. However, she wavered when Leyton ordered her and the Lakota to intercept the USS Defiant before it could bring evidence of his plans to Earth. Benteen initially followed Leyton's orders and fired on the Defiant, but then she stood down her vessel rather than use quantum torpedoes to destroy the Defiant. (DS9: "Homefront", "Paradise Lost")
