Erika Hernandez was a Human female Starfleet officer in the mid-22nd century who had been selected to command the second Template:ShipClass starship, Columbia NX-02 after her promotion to Captain.

Early Career

During her early career, Hernandez was romantically involved with her fellow officer, Jonathan Archer. They were forced to break off their relationship when he became her superior officer. (ENT: "Home")

Her last assignment prior to Columbia was aboard the Republic, under the command of Captain Jennings. When she left, she took his cook with her as a parting gift from her captain. (ENT: "Affliction")

Command of the NX-02

In 2153, Hernandez was promoted to captain, taking command of Columbia, the second Template:ShipClass starship. When the Enterprise NX-01 returned to Earth in February 2154, she sought Archer's advice on the makeup of her senior staff.

When Archer was ordered to take a vacation due to stress from the Xindi mission, he went rock climbing. Hernandez unexpectedly showed up, ready to offer him companionship and solace. She helped him to open up and express his hurt and anger over the travails and ordeals he and his crew suffered during the past year. The two ended up rekindling their romantic relationship and became intimate. (ENT: "Home")

Unfortunately, the launch of Columbia was delayed from June to November because of engine trouble. Hernandez tried twice to convince Enterprise's chief engineer Tucker to transfer to her ship; Tucker ultimately accepted for personal reasons. With Tucker's knowledge and experience, Columbia launched in late November. Tucker would return to Enterprise after asking Hernandez for a transfer back to his old ship. (ENT: "The Aenar", "Affliction", "Bound")

Soon after the launch of Columbia, Hernandez and her crew came to Enterprise's aid after the latter ship's warp matrix was compromised by a Klingon subroutine. Hernandez matched Enterprise's speed, merging the warp fields of both ships to allow Tucker to transfer over to Enterprise, using a tether to pull himself from one ship to the other. Once he was safely on the ship, Tucker performed a cold start of the engines, which reset all subroutines.

Hernandez then had Columbia join forces with Enterprise to protect the Qu'Vat colony, where Doctor Phlox was attempting to cure the Klingon augment virus. She attacked the Klingon ship under the command of Admiral Krell, who was attempting to destroy the colony to prevent the spread of the virus. Hernandez successfully assisted in holding off the Klingons until the situation could be resolved. (ENT: "Divergence")

Background

Erika Hernandez was played by Ada Maris.

Appearances

Apocrypha

Hernandez makes appearances in several novels, including Kobayashi Maru and the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy.

In the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy Captain Hernandez and her crew went to an uncharted system after narrowly escaping a Romulan attack in Kobayashi Maru. There they met the reclusive, technologically advanced Caeliar. Years passed until Hernandez was the only one left alive. But a Caeliar whom Hernandez and her crew first met named Inyx used his technology to infuse cellular "catoms" (nanites) into her, making her near immortal. She was partially responsible for the creation of the Borg as three of her crew members were the first Borg, two the first surviving Borg, and were accidentally created with Caeliar technology.
