A Federation scoutship was a type of starship specialized in conducting scout missions during the 23rd century.
A Federation scoutship discovered the possible existance of aboriginal life on the planet Delta Theta III. In 2269, the USS Enterprise was sent on a mission to that planet to follow up on the report. (TAS: "Bem")
The same year, Cyrano Jones used a Federation scoutship, which he stole from starbase Deep Space K-7, to escape from the Klingons. A Klingon battlecruiser destroyed the scout moments before the Enterprise was able to rescue Jones. (TAS: "More Tribbles, More Troubles")
