Old Bandi City, remastered

The Old Bandi City, before its destruction by the space-dwelling alien

Old Bandi City was a city on Deneb IV and home to the Bandi, where Groppler Zorn maintained his office in 2364.

The City, under attack

The city was within range of the Farpoint Station entity's ability to act upon Commander William T. Riker's desire for a bowl of apples while he was there. The city was constructed out of relatively primitive materials when compared to the newly constructed Farpoint Station, something the visiting Starfleet officers noted. The Old Bandi City was destroyed, with "many casualties," by a space vessel lifeform that could turn energy into matter shortly after the arrival of the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")

Appendices[]

Background information[]

The city was built as a maquette by a team of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM)'s model makers, that included, among others, Barbara Affonso. (Cinefex, issue 37, p. 12) ILM artists Pat Sweeney and David Carson filmed the explosions and fire scenes with this model on 16 July 1987 and were both interviewed during this shooting. These interviews are part of the TNG Season 1 DVD special feature "The Beginning", and were actually produced previously for the 1987 promotional television short ILM Special Visual Effects, Star Trek The Next Generation.

The long views of the city were close-up shots of the Farpoint Station maquette Gregory Jein constructed for the episode, filmed by ILM's Visual Effects Camera Operator Robert Hill. (The Official Star Trek: The Next Generation Magazine issue 2, p. 41).
