Vice Admiral Fitzpatrick was a Starfleet flag officer who served during the mid-23rd century.

In 2268, he sent the USS Enterprise a priority message, following its arrival at Deep Space Station K-7, to remind Captain James T. Kirk of the importance of winning the Sherman's Planet project, with which they were presently involved. He emphasized that the key was the grain quadrotriticale, which was being held aboard K-7, ordering Kirk, "Effective immediately, you will render any aid and assistance which Undersecretary Baris may require," further pointing out that "the safety of the grain and the project is your responsibility." (TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles")

Background information[]

The role of Admiral Fitzpatrick was played by well-known announcer Ed Reimers, familiar in the 1960s for his trademark spokesman line, "You're in good hands with Allstate (Insurance)." A well-known outtake from the episode features a gag where at the end of the communication, Reimers catches a tribble thrown to him from offscreen, and says "You're in good hands with tribbles." [1]

Fitzpatrick's rank insignia

Fitzpatrick was the only flag officer above commodore in The Original Series whose rank insignia was visible: a wide gold band with a single solid rank stripe above and beneath it. [2]

Fitzpatrick appears in the novelization of Trials and Tribble-ations. He is described as "a terminally office-bound serviceman [who] never commanded anything bigger than a bathtub and no farther afield than Starfleet Academy".

The novel Harm's Way gives him the first name Theodore.
