A flashback is a moment in comics, novels, films, or television episodes that shows events that took place in the past. Several Star Trek episodes have featured flashbacks.

Flashbacks were used in several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Orb experiences could also be described as a form of a flashback, such as in DS9: "The Collaborator".

Notable flashbacks[]

"Clues"[]

Data recounted the events in which the crew was incapacitated. (TNG: "Clues")

"Suspicions"[]

Dr. Crusher recounted to Guinan the events that led to her temporarily losing her position on the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Suspicions")

"Necessary Evil"[]

Odo recounted the events where he first became constable on Terok Nor and met Kira Nerys and Quark in a flashback. He had been asked by Gul Dukat to investigate the murder of Vaatrik, a Bajoran chemist. (DS9: "Necessary Evil")

"Whispers"[]

The majority of the episode is presented as flashbacks of the experiences of the Replicant O'Brien on Deep Space 9. (DS9: "Whispers")

"Rules of Engagement"[]

During Worf's trial, the crew recounted the events that led to the destruction of a Klingon civilian transport ship. In the flashbacks, the characters talked directly to the camera, although they are actually talking to Advocate Ch'Pok. (DS9: "Rules of Engagement")

"Hard Time"[]

Flashbacks are used to show Miles O'Brien's time in an Argrathi "prison". These events were all created in his mind by the Argrathi scientists. O'Brien recalls meeting Ee'char, drawing Eseekas and spending twenty years in the prison. (DS9: "Hard Time")

"Trials and Tribble-ations"[]

Captain Sisko tells the Temporal Investigators about the USS Defiant's trip back in time to 2268 and the race to stop Arne Darvin from killing Captain Kirk and changing history. (DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations")

"In the Pale Moonlight"[]

Captain Sisko recounted the plan he and Garak used to manipulate the Romulans into declaring war on the Dominion through a series of flashbacks. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight")

"Broken Bow"[]

The episode begins with a flashback of a 9-year-old Jonathan Archer building a model ship with his father, Henry Archer, referring to Ambassador Soval as "Ambassador Pointy". Throughout the episode, there are flashbacks of Jonathan learning to fly the model. (ENT: "Broken Bow")

"Cupid's Errant Arrow"[]

When Beckett Mariner believed that Brad Boimler's girlfriend Barbara Brinson was too good to be true, she tells him about an experience that she had while on the USS Quito where she witnessed the death of her good friend and crewmate, Angie, who was eaten alive by a Harvongian shape-changer posing as her boyfriend Niko. (LD: "Cupid's Errant Arrow")

"Kobayashi"[]

The episode features a flashback of The Diviner having grown weak over the years in his search for the USS Protostar, and with his species on the verge of extinction, he decided to create an offspring who would continue in his place, should he one day perish. Drednok was against the idea of creating an offspring, but reluctantly assisted and creates a female clone from The Diviner as a daughter, Gwyndala. (PRO: "Kobayashi")
