Does an afterlife exist?

What I'd like to know: In the VOY episode Mortal Coil it's more or less indicated that there is no afterlife and that we simply have to cope with that fact. In the episode Barge of the Dead, however, the existence of an afterlife is implied. And whenever people in the ST universe discuss the concept of afterlife, they at least say that they cannot deny its existence. So: why do these episodes contradict each other, and what is the truth? -- AniWX 18:50, June 29, 2011 (UTC)

The message I got from Mortal Coil is that what Neelix saw was not the afterlife, not that there is no afterlife. One could also argue that what B'Elanna saw was not an afterlife, either. That's a philosophical discussion not really appropriate for this page, but (relating to the question) it isn't necessarily contradictory.--31dot 18:58, June 29, 2011 (UTC)
