As someone who contributes a lot to AR articles: I understand although it's very unusual, and kind of defeats the purpose of an encyclopedia anyone can edit. Can those seeing the film after May 17 not take a hiatus for a week? Are there that few admins in the UK and Australia? If so, very well. --Alientraveller (talk) 22:58, April 29, 2013 (UTC)

::::::I, too, think that locking the site for a whole week or more would not be a sensible thing to do. It was possible last time because it was a very short amount of time, and even then it really wasn't uncontroversial. With a much longer lockdown period, even if theoretically possible to be done by ourselves, except more controversy (including, but restricted to, Wikia). Last but not least, if a lockdown happens at all, it should be a complete one, and not be circumvented by admin edits (whether human or bot). :::It seems we won't be locking the site, so I doubt it matters much, but the maintenance edits I suggested be done during the lockdown are much the same as Cid suggested could happen for the XI lock, because admins shouldn't "cheat". That said, we should add a notice about the difference in release dates to the front page, and maybe the alt portal, soon, as anyone going off the spoiler policy (there must be at least one guy would could find that and not this, right? :p) might be expecting spoiler free-ish reading for an extra week. It might also be worth it to add a brief notice about this to all the AR pages through the articletype template, since site wide notifacations are pretty much pointless thanks to wikia, and I think a good number of those pages actually will have one of the spoiler templates added to them come next week. - 00:21, May 1, 2013 (UTC)

Info for the "spoiler week"
  +
Just some FYIs for the week of spoilers in North America:
  +
*A general notice has been added to articletype for the AR pages about the difference in release dates. When info from 12 is added to pages though, the "normal" spoiler templates (spoiler-header and spoiler-section) should still be used, as the general notice will be removed sometime after or on the 17th.
  +
*The countdowns at Portal:Main/Panels/STXII are suppose to remove themselves when they reach zero, but every time I've tested them here that doesn't happen, so they may need to be removed by hand.
  +
*New can be used to denote that there is new info from the film on links in the portals, since the categories last time didn't really work out. If anybody has a better idea about how to handle this though, by all means use it instead.
  +
*Assuming that info about 13 will come out almost immediately, the redirect can be turned into a page, as all the related templates are ready to go for that "title". Using "Star Trek XIII" instead of some "untitled sequel" placeholder is advantageous, mainly due to the fact that we will keep "Star Trek XIII" as a redirect after the actual title comes out (all the films have a roman numeral redirect), reducing the number of links that would need to be updated. Having "Star Trek XIII" as the page name also doesn't change the sentence structure around the film template, like "Untitled sequel" does, which will reduce the number of places anyone might want to use a piped link instead of the template, hence a smoother transition to the actual title.

Are we doing what we did with the last movie and locking the site for a period? If so, when? 31dot (talk) 19:10, April 27, 2013 (UTC)

It came out in Australia Friday. If we want to lock it down, we lock it down now for... ~3 weeks. -- sulfur (talk) 20:10, April 27, 2013 (UTC)

I see.....wonder why they got such an early shot at it. 31dot (talk) 20:50, April 27, 2013 (UTC)

Wasn't that just a premier screening? Is it definitely on general release over there? --Defiant (talk) 20:55, April 27, 2013 (UTC)
I confirmed (at least for myself) that it's just a very limited preview screening that's happened in Australia, as is due to take place in London on 2 May. So, I think the date we have to watch is 9th May, due to the film going on general release in loads of countries (see here). I'd recommend a lockdown period but a minimal one, keeping in mind wikia didn't seem entirely comfortable with it in 2009. --Defiant (talk) 21:11, April 27, 2013 (UTC)
I thought the plan was to lock the site late on the 8th, with some sort of notice going up beforehand. I was wondering though if any maintenance bot runs, or even some cleanup by hand, could be done with normal editing disabled, as there is a bit of a backlog of things that could be done, not to mention any prep for the film. - Archduk3 22:01, April 27, 2013 (UTC)
If we lock it, only bots with admin privileges would be able to do jobs. Just FYI. -- sulfur (talk)
I wouldn't have a problem with temporary admin privileges being granted for that. - Archduk3 02:09, April 28, 2013 (UTC)
I agree that the site should be locked for 24-36 hours (how long did we lock it the last time around?) on May 8/9th but after that, it should be open for editing. I suggest we put a spoiler warning on the main page and on the major Star Trek (film) related pages (characters, ships, planets) that already exist. All newly created pages for the new film need a spoiler warning too, all until the US release date about a week later. --Jörg (talk) 16:12, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
I agree with allowing info as soon as the film is put on general release anywhere. However, I'm a bit worried that many users in the USA might be "spoiled" just by the names of articles alone, coming up on the "recent information" pages (such as the identity of the main villain). --Defiant (talk) 16:25, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, we need to declare the recent changes page a "spoiler-full" zone as well. --Jörg (talk) 16:30, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
Actually, the whole point of locking the site this, and the last, time was so content couldn't be added before the film was out in the US, because doing so is a violation of the spoiler policy. Last time around, Paramount was smart enough to release the film on the same day, more or less, so the site only needed to be locked for a short time. This time around is different, but the fact remains that content shouldn't be added until the film is released in the US, and I see no way to reliably police that if the admins on the American side of the pond don't want to see spoilers. - Archduk3 20:41, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
I just reread how this was handled 4 years ago: [1]. Back then, we were able to convince wikia to lock the site for 52 hours. Something similar might be possible this time around (to stop the vandals from vandalising on UK/Australian/German release day/night). Locking the site for 8 days, however, would be detrimental to MA, I think. We might have to discuss what is more important in this one case (hopefully this won't happen again for the third film): giving people the chance to edit MA at a time when we finally get new information from a Star Trek film/episode to add, for the first time in 4 years, or keeping people unspoiled. Damn, why did they make it so complicated this time. --Jörg (talk) 21:02, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
I was under the impression "we" can lock the site ourselves this time, without wikia's help. I would also expect a giant banner on the main page would explain everything, maybe with a countdown timer(?), because I think everyone deserves a chance to add new information equally. I can tell you if we're not locking the site, I expect half (I'm just assuming at least half of our readers are in North America) of our readers are going to be pissed at us because those spoiler notices aren't all that helpful when the the page loads with Dead or Destroyed right under them in a sidebar, not to mention names and places. I think so long as people know we're on top of things, a(nother) week without new content here isn't going to kill anybody. If anything, we'll be the safe place to look something up before seeing the film. - Archduk3 21:24, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree. We need some more input from the others, I'll just go with what the majority says. I've already read all the spoilers anyway and have no problem with patrolling the site should others stay away from it during the sensitive time frame. ;-) --Jörg (talk) 21:31, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
Read all the spoilers...are you mad?! I for one won't be here if we're not locked, because my brain must remain clean at all costs until I can splatter new Trek across it using with a screen and sound system that's sucking up enough electricity for a small town. :) - Archduk3 21:43, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
I'll do the same on the 8th (and several more times after that), I'll just be completely spoiled. ;-) --Jörg (talk) 21:51, April 29, 2013 (UTC)
Minor clarification: I can do this without Wikia's direct intervention. -- sulfur (talk) 22:18, April 29, 2013 (UTC)

Info for the "spoiler week"

Just some FYIs for the week of spoilers in North America:

 • Assuming that info about Star Trek Beyond will come out almost immediately, the redirect can be turned into a page, as all the related templates are ready to go for that "title".
