The Gamelan system was a star system. This system contained the inhabited planet Gamelan V and the Meltasion asteroid belt. This system was located in a sector which was adjacent to a sector that contained the Pentarus system.
On Stardate 44307.3, an unmanned garbage scow filled with highly radioactive waste material drifted into orbit of Gamelan V, threatening the planet's population.
The starship USS Enterprise-D responded to the planet's distress call, pulling the vessel out of orbit and tractoring it into the Gamelan sun where it would meet its harmless destruction. (TNG: "Final Mission")
