The Gamma Canaris system was a star system located in Federation space.
In 2267, while transporting a termanlly-ill Commissioner Nancy Hedford from Epsilon Canaris II, the Enterprise shuttlecraft Galileo was pulled off course and forced to land on an plenetoid in this system. The reasons for this change of course and forced landing remain unknown, but Commissioner Hedford was deemed lost. (TOS: "Metamorphosis")
- In actuality, the shuttlecraft had been veered off course by an entity known as the Companion. This was done in order to give Zefram Cochrane contact with some of his own kind. It was revealed that Cochrane, the human inventor of Earth's warp drive who had disappeared centuries prior, had ended up in the Gamma Canaris system where he was rejuvenated (and loved) by the Companion. However, James T. Kirk promised Cochrane that he would not to tell Starfleet what had happened.
