The gamma ray scanner is a part of the sensor array of a Federation starship like the USS Enterprise-D used to scan for or with gamma radiation.
When the ship was conducting scans of the Phoenix Cluster in early 2368, the gamma ray scanner was reprogrammed as well. (TNG: "The Game")
