A gangster was a criminal who was a member of a gang, or who participated in organized crime. The term could also be applied to characters who fit the stereotypical image of a gangster, such as the character who appeared in the holodeck of the starship USS Enterprise-D in 2370. (TNG: "Emergence")
Bugsy Siegel, an early 20th century gangster, was often credited for "building" Las Vegas and starting the hotel/casino industry that later boomed there throughout the latter half of the century. (DS9: "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang")
