Captain Gardner was an officer in the Earth's Starfleet in the mid-22nd century. In the opinion of the Vulcan diplomatic personnel assigned to observe Earth's space programs, Gardner would have been a more suitable choice than Jonathan Archer for captain of Enterprise NX-01. Admiral Forrest defended his choice, correctly pointing out that Vulcan's command was not in charge of Starfleet's personnel assignments.
In 2143, then-commander Gardener was one of the pilots in the NX Test program. (ENT:"First Flight")
