Gasoline is a form of fuel created from refined petroleum, that made up of complex hydrocarbons including such components as benzene, ethylene and acetylene.
During the 20th and 21st century it was used to power internal combustion engines in ancient Earth automobiles. (VOY: "The 37's") Gasoline was made from non-renewable chemicals in the Earth, and Humanity was quickly depleting this resource. This was not realized until the 1970s, but even then it wasn't until 2061 when it was replaced by other, cleaner energy sources. (ENT: "Carpenter Street")
