Genealogy was the study of familial connections.
When Kathryn Janeway explained the significance of her ancestor Shannon O'Donnell to Seven of Nine, Seven did not see the relevance of an ancestor who was fifteen generations removed, and with whom Janeway possessed "a small fraction of her genetic material." Janeway explained that it wasn't "about chromosomes," but rather "character," and that her ancestor's character was what inspired her to become a Starfleet captain.
