A geodesic pulse is a verteron beam fired into the magnetic field of a red giant, designed to create a geodesic fold.
Such a pulse was fired by the crew of a Ferengi vessel in 2377, in an attempt to acquire valuable Borg nanoprobes from Seven of Nine, a crewmember on the USS Voyager, by sending Voyager falsified information indicating that the crew could survive a trip from the Delta Quadrant through a fold. The Ferengis' plan was uncovered by Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, however, who managed to manipulate the Ferengi into closing the fold before Voyager could enter. (VOY: "Inside Man")
