Gerron was a male Bajoran and former Maquis member who was forced to join the Starfleet crew of the USS Voyager when it became stranded in the Delta Quadrant in 2371. He was young and inexperienced; as a result, fellow Maquis resistance fighter Kenneth Dalby was very protective of Gerron during their time on Voyager, as he reminded him of himself as a young man.

Gerron was reticent, to the point of rudeness and, as a result, was ordered by Commander Chakotay along with three other former Maquis members, Chell, Henley and Dalby, to undergo a rigorous Starfleet Academy-style training scenario conducted by Lieutenant Tuvok and aimed at bringing former Maquis personnel unfamiliar with Starfleet standards and in dire need of some discipline up to date. The commander particularly recommended Gerron with the aim of improving his self-esteem through the acquisition of new skills and the completion of set goals.

While Tuvok was inspecting his attire, Gerron guessed (correctly) that his earring would need to be removed. Tuvok also added that his boots were scuffed and he would need to arrive in polished ones from now on.

During one of the exercises, he was almost killed by a plasma leak but was rescued by Tuvok and the rest of the team. (VOY: "Learning Curve")
