The game of go is a simple one to understand. It is so easy to understand a five year old has learned it, but so complex in its details that the computer programs are still relatively weak. The object of the game is to enclose more territory than the other side. To do this, you can place the stones anywhere on the board. But the one thing you need to remember, is that you place the black stones first, than white. Also instead of laying the stones inside of the spaces you lay them on the corners or intersections of the board. The normal size of the board is nineteen by nineteen. For newer players it is reccomened to play on small boards such as nine by nine, and thirteen by thirteen.
Capturing
Though capturing is not the main objective of the game, as in chess, it is an important feature that can change the outcome of the game greatly. To capture a stone you must place the stones of the opposite colors and have them completely surround the other stones.
